5 Countries negotiate legal status of Caspian Sea. No foreign force can be deployed in the sea

The foreign ministers of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran are to meet on Monday and Tuesday in Moscow to discuss the 5th Caspian Summit, where a convention on the legal status of the sea shared by the five countries is expected to be reached.


"The ministers will focus in the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea ... The main objective of the meeting is to prepare for the 5th Caspian Summit to be held in Kazakhstan," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a statement.

Talking to reporters on arrival in Moscow on Monday, he pointed to holding the Seventh Summit of Caspian Sea Littoral States’ Foreign Ministers in Moscow, some 49 expert meetings on the topic have so far been held and two-day foreign ministers’ forum will be held in Moscow to make arrangements for the Leaders’ Summit slated to be held in Astana.

Noting that good advances have been made in Caspian Seal Legal Regime Convention, Zarif said that some 12 documents were also signed in addition to the convention.

Serious talks are underway by the five countries to achieve agreement in all aspects of the convention, the top diplomat said, pointing out that agreements have been made in most of the fields, but all contents of the convention should be agreed on.

Zarif further noted that foreign ministers are to have intensive talks during the two-day meeting, as there may be no chance for talks on the sidelines of the event.
