Germany to add 600,000 jobs in 2018: study

650,000 new positions created in 2017
Germany's labor market will be marked by enduring strength in 2018, the newspaper Neue Passauer Press reported on Tuesday, with reference to a study by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK).

Speaking to the newspaper, DHIK president Eric Schweitzer voiced confidence that employment in Germany would grow for the "13th year in a row" in 2018.

Schweitzer cited a recent DIHK survey which indicated that 600,000 jobs would be added next year, down slightly from the 650,000 new positions created in 2017.

While the willingness of German employers to hire staff was high in general, according to the DIHK, most of the predicted jobs growth in 2018 is to occur in the industrial sector.

However, Schweitzer warned that a growing shortage of qualified workers to fill vacancies posed a threat to the positive development of the German labor market, as well as to the wider economy.

The DIHK president therefore advocated strengthening the existing "dual system" of education in Germany which allows individuals to gain highly-specialized skills through vocational jobs training.

Furthermore, Schweitzer urged the government to improve the availability of child care as a means to attract more women to the labor force and generally enable a better balance between the demands of family and career for workers.

Schweitzer also called for more legal clarity and simpler regulations to ease the integration of refugees into the domestic labor market.
