Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia was on Tuesday facing a general strike over police violence after Catalans went to the polls in an independence referendum deemed illegal by Spanish authorities.
The action was expected to affect the transport, education and health sectors, with rail, subway and bus services in Barcelona reduced to 25 percent.
