The Japanese government on Tuesday lifted its tsunami warning for the northeast coast of the country after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the region earlier in the day.
"The tsunami advisory has been lifted," the Japan Meteorological Agency said in a statement released at 12:50 pm (0350 GMT) on its website.
The quake struck near Fukushima at about 06:00 a.m. local time (21:00 GMT) Monday triggering a tsunami warning with possible waves 3 meters (9.8 feet).
The waves which eventually hit the coast were much smaller, the highest measuring 1.4 meters in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.
