International help arrives in Israel to fight series of wildfires

International help arrived in Israel on Thursday to combat a string of wildfires that have hit the country in the past week.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a plea on Wednesday evening for neighboring countries to reinforce Israel's emergency services after more than 100 hectares were razed by fire, hundreds of people were evacuated and several homes burned down.

Extinction planes from Greece and Cyprus arrived Thursday morning and more machines are expected to land from Italy, Russia and Turkey throughout the day.

"International airplanes arrive in Israel joining police airplanes to deal with fires in the Haifa area. Police units mobilized on the ground," said Micky Rosenfeld on his official Twitter account.

Extinction efforts are concentrated in the northern city of Haifa, where the fire has spread across several neighborhoods and residents are being evacuated.

Jerusalem's surroundings were also affected by several fires that began on Monday, and the cooperative village Neve Shalom, to the city's east, was evacuated on Tuesday.

A new fire was detected on Thursday near the central city of Modiin, and stretches of the main road connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv were closed to traffic.

Since the start of the fires in the past week, the Red Star of David have treated 35 people affected by smoke inhalation.

"Residents are requested to remain indoors and stay away from the source of fire. It is recommended to keep windows shut and not use air conditioners," said the organization.
