End of UN SC veto right would allow US, its allies to ‘rubber stamp resolutions’ — Vitaly Churkin

Cancellation of veto right for permanent members of the UN Security Council will allow the United States and its allies to get almost all resolutions suitable for them approved, Russia’s Permanent Representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin said in a televised interview with the Russian Channel One on Saturday.

"That’s the world where the US and its allies practically always have nine votes in favor of one resolution or another. So without the veto right, they could simply put a resolution on the table and rubber stamp these resolutions," Churkin said.

On October 4, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights urged to take resolute measures to unlock the situation around Aleppo and suggested that some criteria should be adopted for limiting the power of veto at the UN Security Council. This exceptionally important initiative would allow the situation in Syria to be referred to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, he said.

Meanwhile, Churkin said in response that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had not been authorized to speak on the issue. Russian Foreign Ministry official spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the veto right was a tool needed for the world "not to lose its strategic balance."
