US flies nuclear-capable bombers over South Korea after North's nuclear test

Two supersonic bombers of the US Air Force flew over South Korea today in a show of force following the recent nuclear test of Kim Jong-un's North Korean regime.

The two bombers, flanked by South Koreans F-15K and American F-16 warplanes, conducted a low-altitude flight near Osan Asia Base, about 50 kilometers south of Seoul, the United States Forces in Korea (USFK) reported in a statement.

With the deployment of the two bombers, who came from the US Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, in the Pacific, Seoul and Washington want to send Pyongyang a message that the alliance is "ready to respond at any time to threats to stability and security" in the region, the statement said.

Today's show of force is "just one example of the full range of military capabilities in the deep resources of this strong alliance to provide and strengthen extended deterrence," General Vincent Brooks, commander of the USFK, said in a statement.

The general added that the nuclear test conducted Friday by North Korea "is a dangerous escalation and poses an unacceptable threat" and stressed the United States "has an unshakable commitment to defend allies in the region."

The flight of American bombers over South Korea could generate new threats from North Korea in an environment already marked by strong tensions from the recent nuclear test last Friday.

The recent nuclear test, the fifth and the most powerful so far, has generated great concerns, since Pyongyang claimed "success" in this test.

The nuclear test was followed by strong condemnation in the international community. It is possibly that the UN Security Council will impose new sanctions against Kim's regime.

The regime already suffers from a severe restriction in its commercial activities, previously imposed in March 2016.

The United States has a military alliance with South Korea since the Korean War (1950-53.) The alliance is committed to defend its ally in a hypothetical conflict with North Korea.
