Kremlin: Dutch referendum shows citizens’ mistrust for Ukraine-EU association

The Kremlin considers that the referendum is a domestic affair of the Netherlands but Moscow states that the outcome of the vote shows citizens’ mistrust for the Ukraine-EU association.

"This is absolutely the domestic affair of the Netherlands," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The vote shows that the Dutch citizens "have issues and have mistrust, and they signal their mistrust." "We believe it is impossible to interfere in these issues in any way."

  • Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev wrote on his Twitter page earlier in the day: "The results of the Dutch referendum on Ukraine’s association with the EU are an indicator of the Europeans’ attitude to the Ukrainian political system."

On Wednesday, the Dutch citizens were asked to answer the following question: "Are you for or against the ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU? "According to preliminary results, 61.1% of the Dutch people voted against the agreement while 38.1% voted for it.

The turnout was 32.2%, which is sufficient to ensure that the vote was declared valid (30%). The official results of the referendum will be announced by the Electoral Council of the Netherlands on April 12.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has not ruled out that the country may refuse to ratify the EU-Ukraine association deal.
