US imposes new sanctions over Long-range Missile test

The US has imposed fresh sanctions on Iranian companies and individuals over a recent ballistic missile test.

The new sanctions prevent 11 entities and individuals linked to the missile programme from using the US banking system.

The move came the day after international nuclear sanctions on Iran were lifted as part of a deal designed to prevent it developing nuclear arms.

Four American-Iranians were also freed in a prisoner swap as part of the deal.

Among them was Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian. A fifth American freed separately.

The US said it had offered clemency to seven Iranians being held in the US for sanctions violations.

  1. U.S. imposes ballistic missile sanctions on Iran...

The United States imposed sanctions on 11 companies and individuals for supplying Iran’s ballistic missile program, the U.S. Treasury Department said just a day after sanctions targeting its nuclear program were lifted.

Five Iranian nationals and a network of companies based in the United Arab Emirates and China were added to an American blacklist, the U.S. Treasury Department announced in a statement.

The network “obfuscated the end user of sensitive goods for missile proliferation by using front companies in third countries to deceive foreign suppliers,” the statement said, adding that the five individuals had “worked to procure ballistic missile components for Iran.”....http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2016/01/17/U-S-treasury-imposes-new-ballistic-missile-sanctions-on-Iran.html

Iran has denounced new sanctions imposed by the US over its ballistic missile programme.

The sanctions had "no legal or moral legitimacy", a foreign ministry spokesman said.

In October, Iran tested a precision-guided ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead, in defiance of a UN ban.
