At the Nobel Peace Prize offered to nominate residents of six Greek islands

Residents of a number of Greek islands which assisted refugees nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize according to The Guardian. We are talking about a population of Lesvos Kos Chios Samos Rhodes and Leros.

It is noted that the residents of the above-mentioned islands have met most of the 900000 refugees who arrived by sea in Europe last year. Part of the population particularly the fishermen left his job to deal with rescue workers.

The initiative for the nomination of six residents of the islands were made by scientists from Harvard Princeton Cornell (US) Oxford (UK) and Copenhagen (Denmark) universities. At the international online community initiatives AVAAZ.org published a petition in support of the proposal which gained more than 295 thousand signatures of the required 500 thousand.

In the European Union in 2015 a crisis broke out due to the influx of migrants. Most of the refugees arriving from Syria where in 2011 a civil war. Since then over 507000 Syrians have requested asylum in European countries. By According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) more than 800 thousand people came to the the Old World through Greece and Turkey – among them 455000 Syrians and 186000 Afghans. As a result of accidents at sea killed nearly 3.7 thousand workers.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made the greatest contribution to the strengthening of world peace. In 2015 the winner of the award became «Quartet national dialogue in Tunisia” for “decisive contribution to the development of pluralist democracy in Tunisia after the “jasmine revolution” in the country in 2011 “.

A year earlier award got Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai and the Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi children’s rights . In 2013 the prize was awarded Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
