France to close borders during climate summit on security fears

France will temporarily reinstate border controls to ensure the security of an upcoming high-profile international conference on climate change (COP21), the country's interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced Friday.

"In a context of terrorist threat and risk of disturbing the public order", France will close its borders "during one month", Cazeneuve told the news channel BFMTV.

The interior minister said that the re-imposition of border controls is not a violation of Schengen agreement, for the free movement accord allows member states to re-establish internal borders following "special circumstances that correspond to the COP21."

By the end of this month, France will host the 21st session of United Nations conference on climate change, which is expected to gather 80 world leaders.

About 40,000 visitors, including more than 3,000 journalists, will also take part in the summit, according to official figures.
