India, Germany to deploy armed marshals on certain flights

In a bid to counter any hijacking attempt, armed marshals will be deployed on certain flights between India and Germany.

Both countries on Monday inked a pact to this regard, which is among the 18 agreements signed, in front of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The agreement titled "carriage of in-flight security officers within a short time-frame" was signed by India's junior Home Minister Kiren Rijiju and his German counterpart Gunter Krings.

Both the ministers also discussed the threats faced by the two countries from the Islamic State militants ( ISIS /ISIL ) and mulled ways to counter such threats.

Speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in New Delhi, Modi expressed his admiration for Germany’s leadership in clean energy and praised its commitment to mitigating climate change.

"I admire German leadership for clean energy and commitment to climate change. This is an area where we have convergence of view," Modi said as he announced a new assistance package for solar-power projects in India.

Modi said that Germany was a "natural partner" for India at the time of its economic transformation.

"German engineering and India IT skill create a next generation of industry which will be more efficient and environmental friendly," he said.

The Indian prime minister said the two countries were deepening cooperation on clean energy and agreed to commit themselves to a "transition to more sustainable growth," ahead of the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference that will kick off in Paris in late November.

Modi also welcomed Germany's support for India's membership bid at the Multilateral Export Control Regime, and pledged closer cooperation in defense and counter-terrorism, noting that both countries will support the reforms of the UN Security Council.

Calls have been made as early as the 1990s to increase UNSC membership to more accurately represent the contemporary world. As of now, the Security Council only includes five permanent members – Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France. Major nations in Asia and the entire African continent are not represented.
