Greek parliament approves €85bn bailout deal

A majority of Greek MPs have approved the country's third international bailout after an all-night debate.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had earlier urged the chamber to approve the deal "to assure the country's ability to survive and keep on fighting."

Thanks to opposition support, Mr Tsipras easily managed to cross the 151-vote threshold in the 300-seat chamber to pass the bill.

It eventually passed with 222 votes, but 43 MPs - or nearly a third of deputies from Mr Tspiras' Syriza party - voted against or abstained.

Eurozone finance ministers are expected to approve the vital aid for Greece later today.

A government official said Mr Tsipras is to seek a confidence vote after 20 August when a €3.2bn debt payment to the European Central Bank falls due.

If Greece defaults on this debt, the ECB is likely to halt emergency funding for Greece's crippled banks.

Athens was forced to close Greek banks for three weeks and even now capital controls severely limiting withdrawals and payments aboard remain, badly hurting the economy.

Greece's conservative opposition New Democracy party has confirmed it will not back the government in the confidence vote.

MP Makis Voridis said: "New Democracy giving the government a vote of confidence? There is no chance of that".

Mr Tsipras earlier told MPs he does not regret deciding to compromise with creditors and the bailout agreement is a necessary choice.

He added that a German proposal to provide a bridging loan would be "a return to crisis without end".

Even after the Greek vote, the bailout deal faces hurdles.

The IMF made clear it would participate in the programme only if Europe agreed to ease Greece's huge debt burden.

Mr Tsipras has long argued Greece cannot repay all its debts and demanded a partial write-off...

  1. Greece's parliament has backed draft terms for a third bailout in five years after talks that lasted through the night and well into the morning...

The proposed deal involves tax rises and spending cuts in return for a bailout of about €85bn (£61bn, $95bn).

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras also survived a significant rebellion within his own Syriza party.

The terms of the bailout will be discussed by eurozone finance ministers later on Friday.

    The deal received:

    222 votes for
    64 against
    11 abstentions

But there were 31 "No" votes from Syriza members, and 11 abstentions - the biggest rebellion within Mr Tsipras' party so far. The rebels represented almost a third of all Syriza's MPs.

Reports in Greece said the prime minister will ask for a confidence vote before parliament in the next week.............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33925781

  3. Greece package to focus on sustainable finances, reforms - EU Commission...

A package Greece has agreed on with its international lenders will focus on sustainable finances and reforms, leading to a medium term primary surplus of 3.5 percent, the European Commission said on Friday.

To reach the medium term target, Greece agreed to a primary surplus of 0.25, 0.5, 1.75 and 3.5 percent between 2015 and 2018, the Commission added in a statement issued together with other international creditors.

"The credibility of the agreement is underpinned by a significant number of upfront reforms," the Commission said, listing revenue collection, pensions and health systems as some of the government sectors to be reformed.
