PKK rebels attack military units in Turkey

Rebels of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) have targeted military positions in southeastern Turkey, the Turkish military said on Monday.

There were no casualties reported.

PKK militants fired two mortar shells on Sunday on Turkish military units in Daglica town of Hakkari province, said a statement by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

The army responded by firing back at the militants, the statement said, adding that the fire exchange left no causalities.

Turkey's parliamentary elections are set to take place on June 7, amid a cease-fire and talks between the government and jailed leader of the PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, to end a four-decade-old Kurdish insurgency.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey as well as by the US and the European Union.

The group has been fighting the Turkish government for broader rights and autonomy. About 40,000 people were killed in the conflict.
