Fyrom News: Bulgaria Rejects Russian Allegations of FYROM’s Partitioning

Suggestions that a partitioning of FYROM between Bulgaria and Albania is allegedly being discussed are "extremely irresponsible", Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said on Wednesday.

Speaking in the Council of the Federation, the upper house of the Russian Parliament, Lavrov said earlier on Wednesday that “ideas have been floated as to why not dismember it [FYROM] and give a part of it to Albania and another part to Bulgaria”, according to TASS.

“The mishaps, through which the FYROM*** went on the way to establishing and consolidating its independence and sovereignty, are well known to everyone,” Mitov said in a statement.

“All that time Bulgaria has been the country that provided the biggest support for the independence of the  FYROM*** and became a guarantor of its territorial integrity,” he added.

Bulgaria was the first country to recognize FYROM’s independence, Mitov said, and this decision has been key to stability in Southeastern Europe.

He described as “inadmissible” the attempts to call into question the European order in the region and the territorial integrity of Bulgaria’s southwestern neighbour.

“The stability of all countries of Southeastern Europe is of paramount importance to us. Attempts of countries outside the region to undermine its stability through such suggestions must be ended. There can be no doubt that Bulgaria will remain a guarantor of the independence and territorial integrity of the FYROM***,” said Mitov.

  1. Bulgaria calls in Russian envoy to demand explanation of Lavrov comments on FYROM...

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian embassy’s charge d’affaires, wanting an explanation for Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks implying that the partition of FYROM was being sought with a view to giving parts of that country to Bulgaria and Albania, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said on May 22.

A few days earlier, Lavrov said in Moscow – as quoted on the Russian foreign ministry website – “Now there are talks that FYROM must be even deeper ‘federalised’, turned into a ‘flexible federation’ or maybe even a ‘confederation’. Someone even suggested that it should be divided, because of its ‘artificial’ (as they put it) nature, between Bulgaria and Albania.”

Lavrov did not say who “someone” was.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said that Deputy Foreign Minister Valentin Poryazov had invited to a meeting at the foreign ministry the Russian charge d’affaires, Alexander Shapel. Russian ambassador in Sofia Yuriy Isakov is out of the country.

The ministry wanted clarification on Lavrov’s remarks and the mention of Bulgaria in the context of scenarios about the destabilisation of FYROM.........sofiaglobe.com
