  8. Paris massacre possible prelude to wave of Europe-wide attacks – media citing NSA...

The deadly events that unfolded in France over the last week may be the first in a wave of attacks to strike Europe, a German daily reports, citing NSA intercepts of communications between Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) leaders.

Paris was marked as the first in a series of European cities to be attacked, including Rome, the report in the German tabloid Bild read. However, the article didn’t furnish details of a concrete plan to launch an attack.

The US National Intelligence Agency (NSA) also reportedly had information that Cherif and Said Kouachi, the brothers who carried out the mass shooting at the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, had contacts in the Netherlands.

Police were said to have been put on high alert after intelligence learned that Amedy Coulibaly, the terrorist who killed a policewoman on Thursday in Paris and another four people in a kosher supermarket in Vincennes on Friday, may have activated sleeper cells which aim to attack law enforcement, CNN reported.

In a slickly produced video released online, Coulibaly swears allegiance to “Caliph Ibrahim”, also known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed IS leader.

When asked by an unidentified interviewer if he had any links to Cherif and Said, Coulibaly responded:

“The brothers of our team were split into two groups…I went out a bit against the police.”

Despite Coulibaly’s declared allegiance to IS, Cherif had earlier claimed he was trained and financed by Al-Qaeda in Yemen.

On Saturday, one of the Al-Qaeda leaders in Yemen, Harith al-Nadhari, posted a video online threatening France with vengeance...........................http://rt.com/news/221555-france-wave-attacks-europe/

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday he is concerned about so-called lone wolf attacks in the United States by Islamist militants inspired by al-Qaida affiliates.

Holder met with his European counterparts in Paris on Sunday to discuss ways to prevent violent extremism, after Islamist militants killed 17 people in several attacks in the French capital.

Holder said on CBS's Face the Nation program that the “decimation” of core al-Qaida has reduced or eliminated that group's ability to carry out a 9/11-style attack, but he said affiliates like al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula have stepped in to try to inspire people to carry out smaller attacks.

(Reuters) - China will not follow the path of "Western colonists" in Africa, its foreign minister said during a five-nation tour of the continent, parrying criticism that his country's hunger for resources has led to one-sided policies and damaging projects.

China is Africa's biggest trade partner, and has sought to tap the region's rich resources to fuel its own economic growth over the past two decades.

But Beijing's involvement has been called "neo-colonial" by some African leaders, who fear projects bring little benefit to local people, with materials and even labor being imported from China.

  24. Statement of the High Representative and Vice President Federica Mogherini on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti ...

Today is the fifth anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake which ravaged Haiti in 2010, killing over 200,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless. Since then much has been done towards healing and reconstruction. The EU has been at the forefront of international humanitarian reconstruction efforts, initially providing shelter, clean water, food and medical care . Over the last five years the humanitarian response has been complemented by an ambitious reconstruction programme, supporting the Haitian government's efforts to rehabilitate and develop the country's infrastructure, rebuild schools and hospitals, provide public housing and strengthen the administration.

This massive cooperation effort, matching the huge needs, has benefitted some five million people, one in every two Haitians. The EU also values the cooperation within the Group of Friends, whom, together with the UN have provided essential security and contributed the bulk of the emergency and development resources to Haiti.

But Haiti remains the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere, and one of the poorest in the world. Despite the efforts of government and the international community, many still remain homeless from the disaster. Haiti needs steady and effective government and constructive opposition, rising above partisan differences, to steer the nation towards sustainable development.

Haiti is now suffering another political crisis that could reverse the gains of recent years.......................http://eeas.europa.eu/statements-eeas/2015/150112_01_en.htm

Information gathered from migrants rescued at sea “confirms that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are widely used to share information on how to enter the EU illegally,” said the analysis compiled by security experts for EU policy makers.

Social media, which helped spread the Arab Spring revolutions, are now a versatile tool in the hands of migrants and smugglers. Many use members-only Facebook accounts to share information about how to enter the EU illegally and elude authorities once inside............http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/gangs-from-turkey-benefit-from-human-smuggling-in-mediterranean-eu.aspx?pageID=238&nID=76871&NewsCatID=509

In Syria's predominantly Kurdish northeast, Assad's forces and Kurdish militia, mainly the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), have for the most part coexisted without clashing, focusing their firepower on the Islamic State insurgent group.

However, violence broke out when army soldiers and allied militiamen took control of buildings in an area that both sides had agreed would stay demilitarised, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

"There has been some serious fighting today. The PYD (the political wing of the YPG) arrested 10 soldiers and Baath party gunmen," Observatory head Rami Abdulrahman told Reuters.

"There is now fighting in many areas of Hassakeh."

The YPG and the government had divided Hassakeh into zones in a power sharing agreement, the Observatory said.....................http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/120548.aspx

(Reuters) - Ukrainian troops recaptured almost all the territory of Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine they had lost to separatists in recent weeks, even as thousands gathered in Kiev for a state-sponsored peace march on Sunday.

In the video, a knife-wielding black-clad figure stood in a desert area along with two men and wearing orange clothing, believed to be hostages Kenji Goto Jogo and Haruna Yukawa.

The alleged ISIS member said the Japanese public had 72 hours to pressure their government to stop its "foolish" support for the U.S.-led coalition waging a military campaign against ISIS.

Abe said he would honor a promise of $200 million in aid, announced on Saturday, to countries affected by ISIS.

"This posture will not change at all," he told a Jerusalem news conference on the latest leg of a Middle East tour.......................http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/01/20/Japan-responds-to-ISIS-s-hostage-threat.html

  136. Turks, Kurds push for peace breakthrough despite new surge in violence ...

A spate of killings, a looming general election and war next door in Syria are complicating efforts to end the 30-year Kurdish insurgency in Turkey just as a breakthrough in peace talks looks close.

Jailed militant leader Abdullah Ocalan may call an end to his Kurdistan Workers Party's (PKK) armed struggle in Turkey by March, some close to the process say. But some also say unrest in the mainly Kurdish southeast suggests the PKK is flexing its muscles as it looks to stamp its authority in the region.

Four months after broad-based, deadly riots that were provoked by Kurds' anger at Ankara's reluctance to help defend their kin in Syria, fresh unrest has broken out in the town of Cizre near the Syrian and Iraqi frontiers between security forces, PKK supporters and Kurdish Islamists. A 12-year-old boy shot dead in the street last week was the sixth person killed....................http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/120814.aspx

The reports in the wake of the Islamist attacks in Paris two weeks ago have been widely derided and prompted Fox to issue an on-air apology for suggesting parts of Paris and the English city of Birmingham were run under Islamic Shariah law.
