Former Bulgarian PM Borisov Ready to Form New Government

Former Bulgarian prime minister Boyko Borisov says he is willing to take "all risks" to form a new government, after his conservatives appear to have won Sunday's parliamentary election.

Exit polls give his GERB party about 33 percent of the vote, while the main rival Socialists will take about 15 percent.

But no party is expected to win enough votes to govern by itself, meaning that Borisov likely will have to enter into coalition talks.
Bulgaria is one of the European Union's poorest countries - wracked by corruption, a slow economy and a population torn between loyalty to the West and Russia.

Borisov was prime minister from 2009 until he resigned last year in favor of the Socialists.

That government collapsed in July following a banking scandal, forcing early elections.

  1. GERB party leading Bulgarian parliamentary vote: National TV ...

GERB party is leading the Bulgarian parliamentary elections on Sunday, winning about one third of the votes, according to exit polls announced at the Bulgarian National TV channel.

GERB is expected to have 33.2 percent of the votes, against 16.5 percent for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), and the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) would get 14.1 percent, according to Boriana Dimitrova, managing partner of Alpha Research Agency.

The agency said they would be followed by the Reformers Bloc with 8.7 percent, Bulgaria without Censorship with 6.3 percent, and the Patriotic Front with 6.0 percent, while ABV party and Ataka party were around the 4-percent borderline with 4.1 percent and 3.9 percent respectively.

Similarly, Zhivko Georgiev from Gallup International said GERB has got 33.9 percent of the votes, followed by BSP with 16.1, MRF with 14.0 percent, Reformers Bloc with 8.6 percent, the Patriotic Front with 6.3 percent, Bulgaria without Censorship with 5.6 percent, Ataka party with 4.9 percent and ABV party with 4.4 percent.

As number of legislators in the 240-seat parliament, according to Alpha Research, GERB would have 90, BSP -- 45, MRF -- 38, Reformers Block -- 23, Bulgaria without Censorship -- 17, the Patriotic Front -- 16, and ABV -- 11.

    In turn, Georgiev said GERB would have from 83 to 91 seats, BSP -- 38-44, MRF -- 34-38, Reformers Block -- 22, the Patriotic Front -- 16, Bulgaria without Censorship --- 14, Ataka -- 13, and ABV -- 11.

First forecasts based on partial parallel count are expected to be available later on Sunday, and the official results are expected to be released on Thursday.

GERB, which ruled Bulgaria from July 2009 to March 2013, won 97 seats at the early parliamentary elections in May last year, but a government led by the BSP nominee Plamen Oresharski came to power backed by MRF and relying on the tacit support of the nationalist Ataka party. It fell from power in July this year after the MRF demanded new early elections.

  3. Bulgaria’s rocky road to a new governing coalition...

After Bulgaria’s October 5 2014 early parliamentary elections, the country faces a rocky road to achieving a new governing coalition, with some casting doubt on whether it may get there at all.

The morning after provisional results showed Boiko Borissov’s centre-right GERB party winning the largest single share of votes, senior party figures insisted that the party’s approach would be to seek to form a government with Borissov as prime minister.

Local media quoted senior GERB member Roumyana Buchvarova as saying that the party would seek support for a future coalition government from the Reformist Bloc and the Patriotic Front.

Regarding GERB, which also won the largest share of votes in early parliamentary elections in May 2013, but was unable to form a government, the situation in October 2014 may seem reminiscent. However, there are differences................http://sofiaglobe.com/2014/10/06/bulgarias-rocky-road-to-a-new-governing-coalition/

  4. All eyes on Bulgaria’s ‘Turkish party’ MRF.....

It may again have run only third in Bulgaria’s October elections, but the Movement for Rights and Freedoms remains central to conversation in the country’s politics – either as a pole around which the axis of the country’s public life revolves, or as the polecat that few if any other parties want to be near.

The MRF was in particular focus on October 14 in the hours ahead of its scheduled meeting with Boiko Borissov’s GERB, winner of the largest share of votes in the elections and the next government-presumptive......................http://sofiaglobe.com/2014/10/14/all-eyes-on-bulgarias-turkish-party-mrf/
