Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos visited the Greek Community in Alexandria on Saturday, 23 November.

After a tour of the historic Greek quarter and a briefing on Community issues from the Community President, Ioannis Siokas, and Board of Directors, Mr. Gerontopoulos made the following statement: “I was impressed with the work being done here, with the primary school, middle school and high school, the retirement home that provides free relief to our elderly compatriots, as well as the remarkable facilities. Through my presence here, Greece wants to show its gratitude and acknowledge this contribution.”

Mr. Gerontopoulos then visited the Greek Yacht Club of Alexandria, where he was welcomed by the President of the Yacht Club, Edmond Kasimatis, and many members of the Greek community. In his address, he stated, among other things, that “I am pleased to be here at this recently refurbished, historic site, the offices of which housed the headquarters of the Greek fleet in the difficult years of the Second World War.”

Mr. Gerontopoulos met at the Yacht Club with Egyptian Transport Minister Ibrahim al-Domeiry. During their talks they reaffirmed the very good relations between the two countries, which are linked by the historic, thriving Greek community.

Finally, Mr. Gerontopoulos visited the residence of the Alexandrian poet Constantine Cavafy, where he was guided on his tour by the Director of the Alexandria branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, Dr. Manolis Maragoulis.
