High Court rejects application against release of Palestinian prisoners...

The High Court rejected the application by the Almagor Terror Victims Association on Tuesday evening against the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners.

The prisoners are being released as part of a deal that was made in July to kick-start the peace negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

The High Court ruled that it did not have jurisdiction on the matter and that two prior applications that challenged the government's decision were similarly rejected.

Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon (Likud) said Tuesday "The images of the freed killers tonight will be engraved on the memories of the future generation of terrorists who will also dream of returning home as heroes." Danon was speaking at a conference in Beit Shemesh.

  1. News Analysis: Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners advances peace talks...

    by Adam Gonn
JERUSALEM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli government approved Sunday the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners despite strong opposition from ultra-right ministers. The release is the second phase of a four-stage agreement Israel reached with the Palestinians in July for the resumption of direct peace negotiations between the two sides.

The decision to restart the talks came after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry launched an intensive diplomatic campaign after assuming office in February. Kerry has imposed a media blackout on the talks and very few reports on the progress, or lack thereof, have been made public. However, the fact that Israel will release more prisoners could be seen as a sign that Kerry's strategy appears to be working.

Analysts that spoke to Xinhua said that Israel would never plan to release any prisoners if the talks had collapsed.

Professor Gabriel Ben-Dor, of the University of Haifa, told Xinhua on Sunday that the Israeli government's decision indicates that the peace talks are "still alive" and "they haven't lost the momentum completely."

Kerry's efforts to conceal the talks from the media appear to be working, in the sense that neither side has been accused by its people of breaking any of their preconditions or demands set for the other, Ben-Dor said.

The release of prisoners is a sensitive issue in Israel, especially since some of the prisoners released in the previous round had "blood on their hands," a phrase used in Israel to describe prisoners who had killed Israelis. And while the decision has led to tensions in Israel's coalition government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that promises must be kept.

"Netanyahu has a very clear majority in favor of that and he will overcome the crisis, it's just an internal argument in the government but once the government makes a decision then they will go through with it," Ben-Dor said, commenting on the cabinet's approval of the release of more Palestinian prisoners.

Through his media-blackout approach, Kerry was able to get the parties to resume negotiations by simply not stating whether or not either side had backtracked on their preconditions. And in addition he was able to get Israel to agree to a four-stage release of prisoners, of which the second stage is expected to be undertaken Tuesday night......http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2013-10/29/c_132838618.htm

  2. 26 prisoners released by Israel arrive in Palestine...

RAMALLAH, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-one Palestinian prisoners released by Israel arrived in the West Bank early Wednesday while five other detainees have crossed into the Gaza Strip.

Israel released the 26 prisoners late Tuesday as part of the agreement with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), which calls for releasing 104 long-serving prisoners who have been doing their time since before the 1993 Oslo peace deal between the two sides.

The U.S.-brokered deal was reached as Israel and Palestine agreed to resume their peace negotiations in July. The first group of the 104 inmates was released in August while the remaining two groups would reportedly be freed in January and March.

Issa Qaraqe, minister of prisoners' affairs, said the prisoners were on their way to the Palestinian presidency headquarters, where a quick official reception will be held.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli police fired tear gas and water cannon at a crowd awaiting the prisoners outside Ofer prison near Ramallah.

In Gaza, the prisoners' families received their sons with national ballads as they danced holding high their posters and Palestinian flags.

On Sunday, an Israeli ministerial committee approved the release of 26 Palestinians, including some who have spent up to 28 years behind bars, many for killing Israelis.

Palestinian officials say the release of the 104 prisoners is not linked to the progress of the negotiations. In exchange for the release of the old inmates, the Palestinian National Authority ( PNA) has frozen bids to join international organizations.
