Turkish Army Preparing for Imminent Military Operations Against Kurdish Forces in Northern Aleppo

the city of Afrin
The Turkish army is preparing to launch fresh military operations against the Kurdish forces in the city of Afrin in the Northern parts of Aleppo province, Turkish media reported.

"The Turkish troops will conduct their military operations against the Kurdish forces in Afrin in January," the Turkish-language Qarar newspaper quoted military sources as saying on Wednesday.

The sources said that the Turkish troops have laid siege on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from the three directions of Dareh al-Furat, Northern Idlib and borders of Hatay, Kelis and Afrin regions.

They reiterated that the Turkish army's military operations will resume in the same regions in January 2018, and said that Russia will pull out its military troops from Afrin city before January.

In a relevant development on Wednesday, the Turkish National Security Council announced in a statement that Ankara could expand its military mission in Syria to two other provinces, potentially bringing its forces into confrontation with US-backed Kurdish fighters.

The statement said that Ankara is about to expand it monitoring centers in regions close to the town of Afrin in Aleppo province that is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

"It’s been considered that the observation mission of the Turkish armed forces in the Idlib de-escalation zone continues successfully, and such a mission being performed near Western Aleppo and Afrin would provide a real environment of peace and safety,” the statement added.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had stressed that Ankara needed to clear the Afrin region of Northwest Syria of Kurds as the military operation in Idlib province is largely complete.
