North Korea fires ballistic missile, South Korea says

North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles into waters off its east coast, its second show of strength this week, as South Korea and the United States conduct their biggest military exercises in years.

The missiles were fired in a window of about 10 minutes from 7:41am local time on Tuesday morning (22:41 GMT Monday), South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

According to the report, missile launches from this area have never been registered before.

"The military have ramped up surveillance and vigilance in case of additional launches; full combat alert being maintained in cooperation with the US," the JCS said.

On Monday, South Korea and the US commenced the Freedom Shield joint exercise. According to the JCS, the joint exercise is defensive in nature and is "based on operation plans on protection of the Republic of Korea from potential aggression from North Korea."
