Moldova reopens airspace after so-called 'security' closure

Moldova reopened its airspace for civil aviation on Tuesday hours after closing it for security reasons, its aviation authority said.

  1. Moldova has temporarily closed its air space, the country’s national airline said.

“Dear passengers, at this moment, the airspace of the Republic of Moldova is closed. We are waiting for the resumption of flights,” Air Moldova said on Facebook.

The announcement comes as tensions between the former Soviet republic and Russia increased after Chisinau claimed that Russia is planning to interfere in Moldova.

  2. The reason for the sudden closure of Moldovan airspace for flights was the discovery in the sky of an unidentified flying object similar to a mateosonde, the country's Civil Aviation Administration said.

"According to the Ministry of Defense, at 12:30 [at 13:30 Moscow time] in the airspace of the Republic of Moldova near the city of Soroca, an unidentified small-sized flying object, similar to a weather balloon, was detected," the department said.
