Johnson Says Use of Russian Oil, Gas Cannot Be Shut Down Overnight

Russian oil and gas deliveries cannot be shut down overnight and such a transition will require time to find appropriate substitute supplies, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday.

"You can't simply close down use of oil and gas overnight, even from Russia. That's obviously not something that every country around the world can do," Johnson told a press briefing alongside his Canadian and Dutch counterparts. "Clearly, there is going to be a transitional period. We are going to have to look for supply, we are going have to look for substitute supplies from elsewhere."

  1. Russia’s energy supplies cannot be replaced overnight, which is why it has been decided to continue business with Russian companies in this area, concurrently searching for alternatives amid Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday.

"The federal government has already been developing alternatives for Russia’s energy with partners in the European Union and beyond for several months. But this does not happen overnight. That is why our decision to continue the activities of commercial entities in the energy sector with Russia was deliberate," he was quoted as saying by the press service of the German cabinet.

The sanctions pressure is necessary for "hitting Russia hard," according to Scholz. "Europe deliberately carved out Russian energy supplies from sanctions. There is currently no other way of ensuring energy supplies to Europe for heat generation, for transport, electricity and industry provision," he said, adding that this step is important for ensuring the EU citizens' daily routine.
