Ukraine's Kyiv, Kharkiv hit by missile strikes - The Jerusalem Post

Ukrainian military command centers in the cities of Kyiv and kharkiv have been attacked by missile strikes, the Ukrainska Pravda news website cited a Ukrainian interior ministry official as saying on Thursday.



Reuters witnesses in Kyiv heard a series of explosions shortly after Russia announced a military operation in Ukraine.

  1. Multiple reports are now quoting Ukrainian officials as saying troops in neighbouring Belarus are joining the Russian attack, meaning the offensive is now also coming from Ukraine's north.

    Belarus has long been allied with Russia. Analysts describe the small country as Russia's "client state".

    The attack from the north adds to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's east, and Russian troop movement on Odessa in the south.

    The Ukrainian armed forces has posted a statement

    saying that Russian military began "intensive shelling" of its units in the east of the country.

    Russia also launched missile strikes on Boryspil airport near Kyiv and several other airports, the statement said.

    It said the Ukrainian air force is fighting off an air attack by Russia.

    The statement denied reports about Russian paratroops in the southern port city of Odesa.

    He also says the world should "fully isolate Russia", while providing Ukraine with weapons and equipment, financial assistance and humanitarian help.

  6. All flights from Platov International Airport in Russia’s southern city of Rostov have been canceled due to the closure of the southern airspace zone, the airport’s press service said in a statement on Thursday.

    "The aviation authorities have canceled all flights from Platov Airport due to the ban on the use of the southern airspace zone," the statement reads.

    Meanwhile, all flights to and from the airports of Krasnodar, Anapa and Sochi have been suspended until the end of the day, the Aerodinamika company operating the airports said in a statement.

  60. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Moscow does not have or need the backing of Beijing for its military action in Ukraine.

    “As for the US suggestion that Russia has China's backing to act, I believe Russia will be very unhappy to hear such a statement,” ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told the media during a regular press briefing.

    Hua said that Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and an independent power. She claimed that Moscow’s action is based entirely on its own judgement and national interests.

    She emphasized that Sino-Russian relations are based on non-alignment, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties.

    China is not interested in, and has no intention of following, the Cold War mentality of either friend or foe, she added.

    We understand the building appears to be intact, and the smoke actually appears to come from a large fire next to the building. Witnesses have seen uniformed people throwing bags on to the fire.

  63. The Ukrainian military has damaged two civilian ships in the Sea of Azov using missiles, the Russian security service, the FSB, said on Thursday. The attack reportedly injured one person and caused a fire on board one of the ships.

    The border guard division of the FSB’s Krasnodar branch identified the ships as oiler ‘SGV-Flot’ and general cargo ship ‘Seraphim Sarovskiy’. The ‘SGV-Flot’ was the one that was hit. It said the injury sustained by a crew member was “serious,” but the fire was extinguished. Both attacks came from the port city of Mariupol, the FSB claimed.

    Russian maritime traffic authorities had earlier banned all travel in the Sea of Azov due to the country’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the operation was necessary to demilitarize and “denazify” the country.

    "We must look for ways to prevent bloodshed and mass massacre.   71. A Turkish cargo ship sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands from Odessa to Romania in the Black Sea was hit by a "bomb", Turkey’s NTV news outlet has reported. The cargo ship, named "Jupiter", is operated by the YA-SA Shipping company.
    According to NTV, there are no casualties among the ship's crew as a result of the incident. The Turkish General Directorate of Maritime Affairs said that the ship had not requested any aid.

    Ukrainian commander in chief Lieutenant General Valerii Zaluzhnyi has confirmed the military is fighting Russian forces for control of the airport in the Kyiv region, the Reuters news agency reports.

    Hostomel is Ukraine's most important international cargo airport, as well as a key military airbase.

  85. Moscow is willing to negotiate terms of surrender with Kiev regarding the ongoing Russian military offensive currently taking place in Ukraine, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

    According to Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his preparedness to engage in discussions with his Ukrainian counterpart, with a focus on obtaining a guarantee of neutral status and the promise of no weapons on its territory.

    These are terms that, according to Peskov, would enable the achievement of the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and eliminate what Russia currently views as a threat to the security of its state and people.

    “The president formulated his vision of what we would expect from Ukraine in order for the so-called ‘red-line’ problems to be resolved. This is neutral status, and this is a refusal to deploy weapons,” Peskov clarified.

  89. The Russian military has disabled 83 ground facilities of the Ukrainian military structure after strikes, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Thursday, adding that the military has successfully completed all goals for today.
    The military spokesman also said that forces of Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics have managed to break through the defence of Ukrainian forces.
    "Groups of troops of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics broke through the well-equipped layered defense of the armed forces of Ukraine and advanced 6-8 kilometers in-depth," Konashenkov said.

Among the individuals being sanctioned by the UK government is Kirill Shamalov, the former husband of Russian President Vladimir Putin's daughter, Petr Fradkov, the chairman and CEO of PSB bank, and Denis Bortnikov, the deputy president of VTB bank.

    Sanctions will similarly be imposed on Belarus "for its role in the assault on Ukraine," Johnson added.

    Mariupol is one of the biggest Ukrainian ports on the Azov Sea and is located near a frontline held by Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk region - which Vladimir Putin has recognised as an independent state.

    Taking Mariupol would help Russia secure a direct land route to Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

  99. The Ukrainian government has lost control over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exclusion zone established after the 1986 disaster, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said on Thursday.

    "Unfortunately, I must day that the Chernobyl zone, the so-called zone of alienation, and the Chernobyl NPP were taken under the control of Russian troops," Shmygal said, adding that no victims were reported.

    The Chernobyl zone of Alienation is an officially designated exclusion zone around the site of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. Decades after the accident, it became a popular tourist attraction.

  100. Intelligence of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has data that Ukrainian troops are deploying heavy weapons between residential buildings in Mariupol and Artyomovsk (Ukrainian name Bakhmut), Deputy Head of the DPR People’s Militia Eduard Basurin said on Thursday.

    "According to data from our intelligence, Kiev troops are deploying heavy arms among residential houses in Artyomovsk and Mariupol," he told a briefing.

    The global body, which promotes the peaceful use of nuclear energy, says it is following the situation in Ukraine with "grave concern".

    The IAEA says it has been informed by its Ukrainian counterpart that while Russian forces have taken control of the former nuclear facility, no casualties or destruction have been reported.

    1. An An-26 military transport plane of the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed in Central Russia’s Voronezh Region on Thursday, its crew died, the press service of Russia’s Western Military District said.

      "An An-26 plane crashed in the Voronezh Region on February 24, while performing a scheduled flight to transport military cargo. The crew died. There is no damage on the ground. According to preliminary information, the crash was caused by a technical malfunction," the press service said.

      A commission of the Aerospace Forces has been sent to the scene to establish causes and circumstances of the accident.

    As of 21:00 local time on Thursday, background radiation levels around the Chernobyl NPP do not exceed the norm.

    The Automatic Radiation Control System was designed to automatically monitor radiation levels within the 30-km zone around the NPP, located in northern Ukraine.
