Philippine military plane carrying 85 people crashes - AFP - The Jerusalem post

A military plane crashed and broke up in flames in the southern Philippines on Sunday with 92 people aboard, and the army chief said at least 40 people had been rescued.

The C-130 aircraft of the Philippine Air Force had a mishap on landing on the island of Jolo, the air force said in a statement. "Rescue efforts are ongoing," it said.

Pictures from the scene showed flames and smoke pouring from wreckage of the aircraft among trees.

Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana told Reuters the plane had been carrying 92 people, including three pilots and five other crew members, according to his initial reports.

Armed forces chief Cirilito Sobejana told reporters that at least 40 people had been rescued from the crashed plane and were now being treated.

At least 17 people have died and 40 taken to hospital after a military plane transporting troops crashed in the southern Philippines, the country’s defense minister said. Ninety-two people, most of them army personnel, were on board the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft when the accident happened as it tried to land on Jolo Island in Sulu province around midday on Sunday, Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement.

  1. Un avión militar filipino se ha estrellado con 85 personas a bordo, según comunicó este domingo el jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas del país, recoge AFP.

    El accidente tuvo lugar a las 11:30 (hora local) cuando la aeronave, que transportaba tropas desde la ciudad de Cagayán de Oro, intentaba aterrizar en la provincia insular de Joló, en el sur del país, detalló el general Cirilito Sobejana.

    2. Hasta el momento se ha rescatado a 40 personas de los restos del C-130 en llamas, y han sido trasladadas al hospital de la 11.ª División de Infantería de la ciudad de Busbus.

      Muchos de los pasajeros se habían completado recientemente la formación militar básica y estaban siendo desplegados en la isla como parte de una fuerza de tarea conjunta que lucha contra el terrorismo en la región.
