Russian Idea of Synchronized Steps on JCPOA Not Coordinated with Iran: Official - Tasnim News Agency

Russian Idea of Synchronized Steps on JCPOA Not Coordinated with Iran

(Tasnim) – The chief of staff of the Iranian president’s office said Tehran would not confirm a recent proposal made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for synchronized and simultaneous steps from Iran and the US to save the JCPOA.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, Mahmoud Vaezi reacted to the idea proposed by Lavrov that Iran and the US should develop synchronized and stage-by-stage steps to recover the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“The proposals that are put forward do not mean they have been coordinate with us. Such suggestions are meant to pave the way. If a proposal is finalized, it will definitely be publicized,” Vaezi underlined.

He also noted that the JCPOA and the removal of anti-Iran sanctions are critical issues that are being pursued by Iran, many friendly states, and the countries involved in the nuclear deal.

“However, what is expressed (by Russia) is not necessarily proof that we confirm their comments,” the president’s chief of staff noted.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Emirati counterpart on Tuesday, Lavrov said, “In order to resolve this immediate challenge, we find it rather possible to develop synchronized, simultaneous, stage-by-stage steps that must be taken by the Iranians and the US. Because right now, if we stick to discussing who should be first to return to their obligations, the negotiations may last forever.”

He also stressed that Russia welcomes the US’ intent to go back to the nuclear deal.
