Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi hailed on Wednesday the solid and extended Egyptian-Greek friendship, and the advanced level it has reached at various levels during the recent period, a statement by the Egyptian presidency said.

El-Sisi's remarks came during his speech at a session of talks with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou during his current visit to Greece.

The president stressed the Egyptian-Greek agreement on maritime border demarcation was proof of the good relations between both countries.

In August, Egypt and Greece signed a maritime demarcation deal establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between the two countries, which according to Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry "permits Egypt and Greece to go ahead with maximising benefits from riches available in the exclusive economic zones of both countries, particularly the promising gas and oil reserves."

Sakellaropoulou stated the maritime border demarcation agreement is important not only to Egypt and Greece, but also to the entire region.

She said Egyptian-Greek talks are scheduled to touch upon Turkey's escalations and continued violations in the region.

The Egyptian president also expressed during Wednesday's press conference Egypt's aspiration to deepen and strengthen the friendship, especially at the economic and commercial levels by boosting the Greek investments in Egypt.

He also voiced Egypt's appreciation for the warm Greek reception during his visit, which comes third in five years.

Present at the meeting were Shoukry and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias.

Sakellaropoulou emphasised Greece's keenness to strengthen ties with Egypt in all fields, the statement noted.

She expressed Greece’s appreciation of Egypt on the official and popular levels, and her pride in the historical ties between the two friendly countries.

Such historical ties, the Greek president said, are exemplified in the presence of large Egyptian and Greek communities in both countries, the spokesperson of the Egyptian Presidency Bassam Rady said.

Sakellaropoulou also expressed her sincere appreciation for Egypt's stances in support of Greek issues at various levels, adding that "those stances stemming from the sober leadership role of Egypt in the region" that enjoys the respect of the entire international community, the statement said.

Rady said that the meeting dealt with a number of regional issues of common concern, especially combating illegal immigration and terrorism, achieving interfaith coexistence and supporting peaceful solutions to the existing crises in the region.

The two presidents also exchanged views regarding combating terrorism and extremist ideology, Rady said, as El-Sisi reviewed Egypt's efforts in this regard over the past years.

In regard to the recent terrorist operations that took place in various countries, Sakellaropoulou stated during the meeting that "religious values have nothing to do with extremism and violence."

It was agreed to intensify exchanging experiences and information between the two sides to face the challenges posed by this cross-border phenomenon, the presidential spokesperson stated.

At the end of their meeting, the president of Greece awarded El-Sisi the highest and oldest medal in Greece, and he conferred Sakellaropoulou the Nile Necklace.
