UN calls for restraint after assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist - TASS

The United Nations call for restraint in the Middle Eastern region following the assassination of Mohsen Fahrizade, a nuclear physicist, who lead a research center under the Ministry of Defense of Iran, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told journalists.



"We noted the reports that the Iranian nuclear physicist was murdered today [Friday] near Tehran. We call for restraint and urge to avoid any actions that could lead to escalation of tensions in the region," Haq said.

  1. Permanent Representative of Iran in the UN Majid Takht-Ravanchi filed an address to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council over the assassination of Mohsen Fahrizade, an Iranian nuclear physicist, who led a research center under the Iranian Ministry of Defense.

    In his letter, obtained by TASS, Takht-Ravanchi claimed that Tehran is entitled to take all necessary measures in order to protect its interests in the current situation.

  2. A United Nations (UN) spokesman on Friday called for exercising restraint and avoiding escalation in the Middle East region following the assassination of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

    "We have noted the reports that an Iranian nuclear scientist has been assassinated near Tehran today. We urge restraint and the need to avoid any actions that could lead to an escalation of tensions in the region," Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said when responding to a question related to the assassination.

    In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Inga Rhonda King, president of the Security Council for the month of November, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi expressed strong condemnation against the "criminal assassination" of its nuclear scientist.

    He added Iran "expects the secretary-general of the United Nations and the Security Council to strongly condemn this inhumane terrorist act and take necessary measures against its perpetrators."

Irán ha dirigido una carta a la ONU en la que asegura que existen "serios indicios de responsabilidad israelí" en el asesinato del prominente científico nuclear iraní Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, muerto este viernes tras ser tiroteado cerca de Teherán. Así lo informa Reuters citando la misiva, firmada por el enviado especial de Irán en la organización, Majid Takht Ravanchi.

    "Advirtiendo contra cualquier medida aventurera de los Estados Unidos e Israel contra mi país, particularmente, durante el período restante de la actual Administración de EE.UU. en el cargo, la República Islámica de Irán se reserva el derecho de tomar todas las medidas necesarias para defender a su pueblo y asegurar sus intereses", escribió el diplomático iraní.

    Según la agencia, la carta fue enviada este viernes al Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU y al secretario general de la misma, António Guterres.

    A su vez, la organización internacional reaccionó con un llamamiento "a la moderación" a través del portavoz de Guterres, Farhan Haq, quien subrayó la necesidad de "evitar cualquier acción que provoque una escalada de tensión regional".

  4. The killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh will not remain unanswered, President Hassan Rouhani warned, adding that Iran, however, would not be entrapped by the Zionist regime.

    Speaking at a Saturday meeting of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani paid tribute to the late Iranian scientist and researcher, Fakhrizadeh, for his contribution to the development of homegrown test kits for COVID-19 in the last couple of months.

    The Iranian nation is so courageous and zealous that it won’t allow the crime to remain unanswered, the president added, pledging a response to the assassination “at the appropriate time”.

The United States is moving its USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and other warships into the Persian Gulf to support the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, CNN reported on Saturday, adding that the decision was made before the assassination of Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
