Turkish troops in Azerbaijan

The Turkish Presidency on Nov. 16 submitted a motion to the parliament to deploy Turkish troops in Azerbaijan.

The motion, which was submitted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government, seeks to deploy troops for peacekeeping in the Upper Karabakh region for one year.

The deployment "will be for the benefit and welfare of the people in the region," the motion said, adding the move will also be in Turkey’s national interests.

The motion will be voted on in the parliament on Tuesday.

  1. Last week, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar concluded a memorandum on creating a joint centre to control the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey's presidential office has submitted a motion to the country's parliament for the deployment of Turkish troops to Azerbaijan, the Anadolu news agency reported on Monday. The parliament is expected to consider this issue in the next few days.

The Kremlin, in turn, referred to Turkey's "internal procedures", adding that submitting such a motion pertains to Ankara's domestic affairs.

The report comes after Turkish President Recep Tayiip Erdogan said last week that Moscow and Ankara had signed a memorandum on setting up a centre for control over the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh.
