Private search for flight MH370 to end next week

Malaysia's new transport minister has said the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 by a private US firm will end on Tuesday next week and there will be no more extensions.

US-based Ocean Infinity has been searching for the aircraft that disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March, 2014, with 239 people on board, in one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

"This morning I raised this in cabinet and agreed to extend to May 29," Anthony Loke told reporters.

Asked if that meant no more extensions, he said: "Yes."

No sign of the plane was found in the original 120,000sq/km Australian-led hunt, which was the largest in aviation history, and was suspended in January 2017.

But the Malaysian government struck a "no find, no fee" deal with exploration firm Ocean Infinity to resume the search in an area north of the original zone, that scientists believe is the likeliest crash site.

The company would only get paid if it finds the plane in the 25,000sq/km search area.
