Israel says it has hit Iranian targets in Syria after missiles were fired at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights

Golan Heights
Israel has attacked dozens of Iranian targets in Syria in response to a rocket salvo against its army bases in the Golan Heights, according to the Israeli military.

Israel also struck five Syrian anti-aircraft batteries that fired at its planes, the statement said.

After Iranian forces in Syria shelled Israeli army outposts across the Syrian frontier, Israel launched one of its heaviest strikes in Syria since its civil war began in 2011.

An Israeli military spokesman has said Russia was forewarned of the strikes.

The attack into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights marks the first time Iranian forces have hit Israel from Syria, where they have deployed along with Iran-backed Shi'ite militias to support President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war.
