Up to 900 civilians martyred or injured in Turkish continued aggression on Afrin amid UN complete silence
The inhabitants of Afrin area urged the United Nations and all countries in the world to take action and put an end to the Turkish regime’s assault and massacres against civilians that would not continue without the support of Washington and its allies which gave green light to terrorist groups to continue their criminal acts despite the UNSC Resolution No.2401 demanding 30-day cessation of combat activities.

Up to 900 civilians were martyred or injured as the Turkish assault on Afrin area has entered its 47th day causing devastating destruction in the main infrastructure including schools, water and power plants, communications towers, telephone networks and health centers.

Haidar Mohammed, a civilian from Afrin city, told SANA reporter about the inhabitants’ unbearable suffering under harsh living conditions amid deafening silence of the international community over the crimes perpetrated by the Turkish regime.

He noted that more than 200,000 people have fled the heavy Turkish shelling of their towns and villages in Afrin area.

For her part, Shireen Mamo spoke to the conscience of the world, wondering whether the world could stand idly by and watch this tragedy which threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians growing more drastic.

Other civilians stressed that Afrin is a Syrian city which suffers the most heinous crimes committed by Erdogan and its gang using internationally banned weapons, reminding of the Turkish army’s use of chlorine gas against civilians in al-Mazynah village on February 16th but there have not been any significant moves by any international organization to condemn this crime.

SANA reporter toured Afrin city and stated that the Turkish forces have destroyed the communications towers in Qatma village which resulted in a complete communication deadlock so that the region has been totally isolated from the world, not to mention cutting off Afrin’s main water supply from Midanki Dam which portended a tragic humanitarian catastrophe for hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Since the beginning of the Turkish aggression on Afrin area on January 20th, more than 20 bakeries and several water and power plants have been destroyed, in addition to the demolition of hundreds of houses and the displacement of thousands of citizens.

Moreover, the Turkish forces targeted a convoy loaded with humanitarian aid, foodstuffs and relief materials on the way to Afrin area on February 22nd, 2018 and continued shelling of Aleppo-Afrin highway to prevent the delivery of assistance materials.

Afrin Hospital could not escape the Turkish bombardment of the city with its Director Khalil Sabri saying that there has been a remarkable increase in the number of martyrs and the injured people over the past few days as the Turkish forces escalated their offensive on the towns and villages in the area, estimating the number of martyrs since the beginning of the aggression at 218 civilians, in addition to 651 injured ones.

  1. A group of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Kurdish issue-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) lawmakers traded blows during a parliamentary session late on March 7 while debating Turkey’s ongoing military operation into the northern Syrian district of Afrin.

The brawl erupted after HDP lawmaker Mahmut Toğrul cited an Amnesty International report on civilian casualties in the operation, and called for the operation to be brought to an end.

“As the operation continues, civilian casualties are increasing,” Toğrul said.

A number of AKP deputies then accused Toğrul of being a “mouthpiece of the [outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party] PKK,” and fisticuffs broke out after AKP deputy Leyla Şahin Usta approached Toğrul.

HDP Deputy Group Chair Filiz Kerestecioğlu said Toğrul was injured in the brawl.
