Germany spends 72.2 mln euros on G20 Hamburg summit

The German government had spent approximately 72.2 million euros (90.25 million dollars) on the G20 Hamburg summit, German media reported on Sunday, citing data released by the Finance Ministry.


According to German news agency dpa, a total of 27.7 million euros were spent on policing and security carried out by the Federal Criminal Police Office, the civil-defense agency THW and the German Federal Office for Information Security.

The support for thousands of accredited journalists covering the event and its internal communication of German Federal Press Office cost 22.1 million euros. Another 21.7 million euros were used to make arrangements for visiting heads, dpa reported.

The figures were made to respond to a query by Germany's Left party (Linke). The parliamentarian Alexander Neu of the party said that "summit meetings like the G20 are becoming more and more expensive, less transparent, more remote from citizen's lives and also less productive".

Moreover, media analysts said that the total costs of the summit, which took place from July 7 to 8, would be higher, because the Hamburg government has not released its cost.
