Authorities say over 2 mln voters will vote in upcoming elections in Libya

upcoming elections in Libya
Libya's Higher Commission of Elections announced late Friday that more than 2 million voters have registered to cast ballots in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections to be held before Sept. 30.

"The registration index of the voter registration system has reached a record high of 2,005,814 voters until 10:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Friday," the commission said in a statement.

Women's registration rate is still moving at the same pace as last week, it said. "Women participants account for 41 percent of the total number of registered voters."

"Registration will continue until February 6. The Commission will open the registration system abroad on February 1 through an online electronic registration," the statement added.

Following the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been struggling for a democratic transition amid a tumultuous security situation and political division.

United Nations Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame in September proposed a roadmap aimed at ending the political crisis in Libya, which included amendments to the current UN-sponsored political agreement as well as calls for holding presidential and parliamentary elections before the end of 2018.
