Venezuelan president hails "new era of coexistence" with opposition

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday hailed a new era of political coexistence following months of bitter political disputes between the ruling socialist party and the right-wing opposition.

"A new era of coexistence, of harmony, of cooperation with an important sector of the Venezuelan opposition has begun, and I applaud that," said Maduro.

The president spoke at a gathering with 18 newly-elected governors allied with the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), and after meeting with three of four opposition governors who took the oath of office before the National Constituent Assembly (ANC).

The fact that the four governors accepted the political superiority of the ANC, an all powerful body elected to draft a new Constitution, has caused further cracks in the opposition.

While Maduro spoke of a new era of cooperation between the two camps, the four governors have had to defend their actions, and even risk being penalized by their conservative parties.
