Buildings fall as 7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico. People in Mexico City said they felt the earthquake

Buildings fall as 7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Mexico
A preliminary 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico, 32 years to the day after a massive quake devastated the country, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter of the temblor was located about 34 miles south-southwest of Puebla, about 90 miles southwest of Mexico City and 31 miles below the surface.

People in Mexico City said they felt the earthquake when it struck about midday Tuesday. It sent thousands of people into the streets as buildings evacuated.

"I was having lunch when the floor gently rocked as if a big truck went by," Adrian Wilson, a photographer from New York City, told CNN. "It then amplified in waves and the whole room started shaking. The building is from the 1930s and just survived a big earthquake, so I knew I would be OK."

At least one building collapsed, facades fell on others, crushing vehicles.

Mexico's former ambassador to China, Jorge Guajardo, posted a video to Twitter showing one building instantly crumble.

The BBC said multiple fires were reported throughout the region and Mexico City's airport suspended operations.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted that he was in Oaxaca and immediately returning to Mexico City to "address the situation."

"I have called the national emergency committee to assess the situation and coordinate actions," he said.

  1. Scores killed after 7.1-magnitude quake strikes central Mexico...

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake stunned central Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least 120 people as buildings collapsed in plumes of dust. Thousands fled into the streets in panic, and many stayed to help rescue those trapped.

Dozens of buildings tumbled into mounds of rubble or were severely damaged in densely populated parts of Mexico City and nearby states. Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said buildings fell at 44 places in the capital alone as high-rises across the city swayed sickeningly.

The quake is the deadliest in Mexico since a 1985 quake on the same date killed thousands. It came less than two weeks after another powerful quake caused 90 deaths in the country's south.

Mexico City's mayor said at least 30 died in the capital, and officials in Morelos state, just to the south, said 54 died there.

At least 26 others died in Puebla state, state disaster prevention chief Carlos Valdes said. Gov. Alfredo del Mazo said at least nine died in the State of Mexico, which also borders the capital.
