Wildfires have ravaged more than 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of southern France as firefighters battled to control flames inland from the Mediterranean coast and, most intensely, on the island of Corsica on Tuesday, officials said.
Residents that had been forced to evacuate hundreds of homes near Vaucluse, located next to the upscale coastal resort of Nice, were being allowed to return home amid some 600 hectares of ashen countryside on Tuesday while more than 1,500 hectares in Upper Corsica had been ravaged by flames, local authorities said.
