Sturgeon expected to set out position on second Scottish referendum

Nicola Sturgeon is expected to set out her position on a second independence referendum at the Scottish parliament in Holyrood today.

The First Minister has been reflecting on her plans for a second vote following the recent UK general election.

She tweeted this morning that she will be seeking agreement of the Scottish parliament to make a statement later today on the way forward for Scotland after the general election.

Ms Sturgeon had been due to give a speech on Brexit to the Association of British Insurers in London but her appearance was cancelled this morning.

Her plans to make a statement follow reports at the weekend suggesting she is to put her demand for a second independence referendum on hold to instead focus on delivering a "soft Brexit"...

  1. Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed a second vote on Scottish independence is being postponed as she announced a "reset" of the timetable set out for another referendum.

Last March, the Scottish parliament backed Ms Sturgeon's bid to hold a new referendum in 2018 or early 2019, but British Prime Minister Theresa May had refused to enter into discussions on the proposal.

"We will not seek to introduce the legislation for an independence referendum immediately," Ms Sturgeon said, adding that she would still aim to offer a new vote on secession after it was clear what Britain's decision to leave the European Union meant.
