Social democrat Steinmeier elected new President of Germany

The social democrat Frank-Walter Steinmeier was on Sunday elected President of Germany by a constitutional body.

The former foreign affairs minister received votes from 931 of the 1,253 representatives that make up the Federal Assembly, which gathers every five years to elect a new federal president.

Steinmeier's election came as no surprise, as the ruling coalition _ which includes Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), its Bavarian wing the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) _ held 924 votes, and other smaller parties had also pledged him their vote.

He was facing four other candidates, the most popular being The Left party's Christoph Butterwegge, who received 128 votes.
