Berlin attack suspect shot dead in Italy

The Tunisian man suspected of carrying out the Berlin truck attack has been shot dead by police in Milan, Italy has confirmed.

Anis Amri, 24, was accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more in Monday's assault on a Christmas market, which has been claimed by the so-called Islamic State group.

Italy's interior minister Marco Minniti said Amri had been shot dead after firing at police who had stopped his car for a routine identity check in a Milan surburb at around 3am (2am Irish time).

A police officer injured in the shooting is now recovering.

Identity checks had established "without a shadow of doubt" that the man shot dead was Amri, the minister said at a press conference in Rome.

Amri had been missing since Monday and a Europe-wide wanted notice had offered a €100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
