US naval base in Japan's Nagasaki put on lockdown after reported gunshots

A US naval base in Japan's Nagasaki was put on lockdown for around one hour Thursday morning following reports of gunshots.

Gunshots was reported in a building at the base around 9:33 a.m. local time, and the building was evacuated, with security and fire departments personnel checking the site, said a post on the official Facebook page of Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo Japan.

The post also asked people at Sasebo Naval Base to "be sheltered in place immediately," stressing that it was not a drill.

The lockdown was lifted about one hour later, with no evidence of shots fired or an active shooter found, nor any injury reported, according to another post on the commander's page.

US troops have been stationed in Japan since the end of World War II. The Sasebo Naval Base, the second largest US base in Japan, provides facilities for the logistic support of forward-deployed units and visiting operating forces of the United States Pacific Fleet.
