UK Lawmakers Call For New Investigation Into Tony Blair

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair could face a fresh investigation over the Iraq war, as a group of lawmakers prepares to put forward a motion calling for a new inquiry, local media reported.

The new motion calls on lawmakers to recognize that the inquiry "provided substantial evidence of misleading information presented by the then prime minister and others on the development of the then government’s policy towards the invasion of Iraq as shown most clearly in the contrast between private correspondence to the United States government and public statements to parliament and people," as quoted by The Observer on Saturday.

The group, which includes lawmakers from six parties, is expected to put down motion on Monday in the House of Commons calling for a parliamentary committee investigation.

The motion will then be debated on Wednesday in the lower house of parliament in a time slot allotted to the Scottish National Party (SNP). According to SNP Member of Parliament Alex Salmond, "an example should be set, not just of improving government but holding people to account."

The motion could lead to Blair being stripped of his membership of the Privy Council.
