South Korea's president asks for more time to prepare for questioning by prosecutors

An attorney for South Korean President Park Geun-hye requested more time to prepare for an investigation into alleged corruption in her administration.

Yoo Yeong-ha, appointed Park's legal representative on Monday, asked the prosecution for a postponement of the in-person questioning of the president, which was to take place Wednesday.

Park agreed to accept an independent investigation into the corruption and bribery scandal that has overwhelmed her administration and led to street protests of up to 1 million demonstrators, and calls for her resignation.

Park faces charges she played a role in pressuring Samsung and other major South Korean corporations into donating funds to two nonprofit foundations, which could be seen as an abuse of her authority.

She also is suspected of allowing confidante Choi Soon-sil access to documents and advance copies of speeches, some of which could have included classified information. Residences of two of Park's aides were searched for information, as were Samsung's offices, and Park apologized to the nation on Nov. 3, saying her role in the nonprofit organizations was based on "pure motives."

A spokesman for Park said she has no plans to resign, a signal that the country may be thrown into further turmoil.
