Israeli officials on Monday reiterated to France that Israel would not participate in an international conference aimed at jump starting the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, and called on France not to promote such an initiative.
The acting head of Israel's national security council Jacob Nagel and Netanyahu's special envoy Isaac Molcho on Monday met with France's special envoy for the Israeli Palestinian peace process Pierre Vimont in Jerusalem, where Vimont presented France's intentions to convene an international summit by the end of the year.
A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said that "Nagel and Molcho clarified unequivocally that promoting a real peace process that leads to an agreement will only be resulted through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and that any other initiative pushes peace further away."
"It was clarified that Israel will not take part in an international summit that will be convened against its stance," the statement continued, adding that "Promoting such a summit will significantly harm the peace process because it allows President Mahmoud Abbas and the PA to keep avoiding a decision to engage in direct talks without preconditions."
"Israel expects France not to promote a summit or any other moves opposing Israel's official stance," the statement concluded.
