Iraqi forces seize more land north, south of Mosul from Islamic State

Iraqi security forces say they have advanced farther into Islamic State areas north and south of Mosul while the United Nations says 14,000 people have been displaced in the past week.

On the southern front, the Iraqi security forces' 9th Armored Division and the Nineveh Operations Command captured parts of the city of al-Salamiyah, villages in al-Hamirah and a section of a road between Kirkuk and Mosul, Rudaw reports.

On the northern front, Iraqi forces captured the villages of al-Salam, Orta Kharab and Abbasiyah, which are near the Tigris River.

Iraqi security forces, aided by the Kurdish Peshmerga, Shiite militias and a U.S.-led international coalition, have taken most territory east, north and south of Mosul from the Islamic State, also known as ISIL, Daesh and ISIS.

Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units, or PMU, said the Tal Afar Airport, which was recently fully captured by the Hashd al Shaabi Shiite-led militia, has been renamed after Jassim Shabir, a member of the Shura of Kata'ib Jund al-Imam Shiite militia.
