2% of GDP: Foreign ministry’s spokeswoman translates Stoltenberg into "comprehensible" language

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on his page in Facebook an address from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, published in The Guardian.

From Stoltenberg’s address to Trump
The spokeswoman said, Stoltenberg spoke about "greatest challenge to security in a generation." "… we need to recognise the value of the partnership between Europe and America," the Guardian quoted him.

"The only time Nato has invoked its self-defence clause, that an attack on one is an attack on all, was in support of the United States after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This was more than just a symbol. Nato went on to take charge of the operation in Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of European soldiers have served in Afghanistan since. And more than 1,000 have paid the ultimate price in an operation that is a direct response to an attack against the United States."

Stoltenberg continued: "Russia … has become more "assertive" in recent years", and said about instability in the Middle East and northern Africa.

The alliance’s director general confirmed "America accounts for 70% of Nato spending …and we need Europeans to shoulder their fair share of the burden."

  • Translation into comprehensible language

The spokeswoman translated the article into the ‘real politic’ language.
"So, who will be taking the expenses and guide us? Who will be paying us for the obscurantism we are promoting as directed from Washington? For the recent years we are unable any more to think or act independently," the diplomat wrote translating Stoltenberg’s words into "understandable Russian". "We have done everything for the U.S. establishment, including deployment of forces and weapons in our sovereign countries in peaceful times. How then should we look into eyes of our people?"

"They would not forgive us, no doubt, especially after the sanctions wars, which have undermined sectors of our thoroughly-made economy. And you over there will regret that we here begin living independently," she continued translating.

"We turn a blind eye on what the U.S. has made in Afghanistan, where drug production (of precursors) grew by many times, and those drugs are arriving first of all to us, into Europe. We do hot utter a word about thousands of servicemen injured in the U.S. adventure in Iraq. Not that we are ashamed, but because you have been paying us to do so. And, noteworthy, it was sufficient for us, we would be happy even with smaller allowance, if you please, we have agreed to dump the relations with Russia as we accused it of all the sins to satisfy the ruling U.S. administration, which relied greatly on this to retain the White House."

"Do understand, we do not want to remove the blindfold you have put on us, as in that case we would have to acknowledge we are far from the reality and we are nude. Yours, hopefully, Forever, NATO secretary general," the foreign ministry’s representative wrote to conclude the translation.
