A United States Navy destroyer was targeted on Wednesday by missiles originating in an area of Yemen controlled by Iran-backed Houthi rebels, US officials told Reuters – the second such incident in four days.
The USS Mason fired defensive shots after being targeted, the official said.
The destroyer was not hit by any missiles in the attempted attack, which occurred on the anniversary of the October 12, 2000 terrorist attack on the USS Cole destroyer in Yemen's port city of Aden.
The US has not directly intervened in Yemen's conflict, in which a coalition of Gulf nations led by Saudi Arabia is targeting the rebels. The Houthis denied involvement in an attempt on Sunday to strike the USS Mason, but officials told Reuters that mounting evidence suggests complicity in that incident.
According to the report, rebels may have used small skiffs to locate the ship, and the US is considering whether a radar station controlled by the Houthis may have helped the attack.
