Egypt criticises US Embassy's security alert for Cairo: US and Canada embassies warn citizens to avoid gatherings in the capital over the weekend

Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised Friday a US Embassy in Cairo security alert urging US citizens to avoid gatherings and public spaces in the capital over the weekend. The embassy did not identify any "security threats," a ministry statement read.

The US Embassy did not coordinate with the foreign ministry or notify Egyptian authorities of the reasons behind the security alert, the foreign ministry statement read.

"[This] sheds question marks on the reasons behind issuing the [security warning] in this manner," the statement added.

The statement also revealed that the foreign affairs called the US Embassy in Cairo following the release of the security alert and that the embassy denied any particular reason for issuing the alarm, adding that it is a routine procedure during extended weekends.

During the phone call, the ministry "denounced such security alarms, that don't give a reason, and that could have negative impacts and harm the country's economy."

The Canadian Embassy in Cairo issued a similar security alert Friday, without giving reasons.

  •  The US and Canadian embassies in Cairo issued a security warning on Friday urging their citizens in Cairo to avoid any gatherings and public spaces over the weekend, October 7-9.

Both embassies strongly advised their citizens "to avoid large gatherings and public spaces such as concert halls, movie theaters, museums, shopping malls, and sports venues in Cairo through Sunday, October 9, due to potential security concerns."

The statements did not specify the reason for security concerns behind the warning.

Over the past 5 years, foreign embassies have usually issued similar warnings related to planned mass protests in Egypt.
