A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Marche region in central Italy, just hours after a 5.4-magnitude temblor damaged buildings and cut power lines across the area. Buildings across the region have been damaged, but so far, there have been no reports of fatalities.
The latest earthquake occurred 9.18 p.m., 71 km east of Perugia, with United States Geological Survey reporting it as a 6.0-magnitude temblor, and Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology saying it was 5.9-magnitude.
“It was a very strong, apocalyptic earthquake – people were screaming in the street, and now the lights are cut off,” said Marco Rinaldi, the mayor of Ussita, a community of 400 that was also affected by the initial earthquake. “Many houses have collapsed. Our area is devastated.”
Trains were stopped for checks, while police closed off some roads in danger of potential landslides. A football match was briefly suspended.
Impact was felt as far away as Naples, Rome and Florence. In the capital, historical monuments were shaking from the shockwaves.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has returned from a trip inside the country to chair an emergency meeting in Rome, and has canceled a planned TV appearance.
Within an hour of the first earthquake, there was a series of small but noticeable aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 2.8. After the second there were at least four after shocks exceeding 3 on the Richter scale.
“We’re in the square, all the lights are out, we can’t see, we’re counting each other to see who’s here, we still don’t know how bad the situation is,” Mauro Falcucci, mayor of Castelsantangelo sul Nera, the small commune closest to the epicenter, told Sky News by phone. “The situation is delicate. It is important to remain calm.”
The official said that the emergency is exacerbated by a downpour, and intermittent problems with mobile phone communication.

ReplyDeleteIn Rome, the quake rattled windows and doors, sending panicked people into the streets. The imposing foreign ministry headquarters was temporarily evacuated.
ReplyDeleteSono in corso le verifiche della protezione civile nell'area interessata dalla forte scossa di terremoto che ha colpito l'Italia centrale. Dalla sala operativa di Roma fanno sapere di essere in contatto con i sindaci interessati: per il momento si segnalano linee elettriche saltate soprattutto a Castelsantangelo sul Nera, localita' piu' vicina all'epicentro. Ancora non si hanno notizie certe di crolli. La gente e' scesa in strada in molti centri, tanta la paura. Le squadre di protezione civile gia' presenti sul territorio sono tutte impegnate nei controlli.

A causa del sisma, si apprende da fonti di Palazzo Chigi, Matteo Renzi ha deciso di non partecipare alla puntata di Matrix di questa sera. Il ministro dell'Interno, Angelino Alfano, sta seguendo da circa un'ora la situazione dalla sala operativa dei vigili del fuoco al Viminale.
