The US House of Representatives on Friday voted to pass legislation allowing the families of victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks to sue the government of Saudi Arabia for damages, despite a warning from the White House that it would veto the measure.
The "Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA)", which would permit US courts to take action against the Saudi leadership and hold them legally liable for any role in the 9/11 attacks, was passed unanimously by the US Senate in May.
The vote comes just three days before the 15th anniversary of the attacks, in which 2,996 people were killed.
The White House on Friday reiterated that President Barack Obama would veto the bill. A presidential veto could be overridden if the bill is still supported by a required two-thirds of both the Republican-majority Congress and Senate.
The Obama administration has lobbied against the bill arguing that the legislation would put Americans at legal risk overseas. Washington has also warned of the possibility of major diplomatic and economic fallout with the Saudis if the legislation passes...

Les familles et les proches des victimes des attentats du 11-Septembre ont reçu, vendredi 9 septembre, le feu vert du Congrès américain pour poursuivre en justice des pays étrangers soupçonnés de soutenir des attaques contre les États-Unis.
Le texte, contesté par l’Arabie saoudite, fréquemment accusée, en Occident, de financer des mouvements extrémistes et d’avoir favorisé la propagation du salafisme dans le monde arabe, doit encore être ratifié par le président américain. La Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act a été adpotée vendredi à l'unanimité par la Chambre des représentants, quatre mois après avoir été approuvée par l'ensemble des sénateurs.
Quinze des 19 terroristes qui ont perpétré les attentats du 11-Septembre, dont le 15e anniversaire sera commémoré dimanche, étaient des ressortissants saoudiens. Cette loi permettrait aux familles des victimes des attentats de poursuivre, notamment, la monarchie wahhabite pour obtenir des indemnisations, si sa responsabilité était prouvée.
